Cross-cutting a tree

Cross-cutting a tree

Two men – possibly civilians? – using a two-man saw to cross-cut a felled tree trunk. The work-type garments being worn would appear to suggest that these men are civilians rather than enlisted men.

It is highly likely that the timber being processed in this photograph would be used for improving the structure of the trenches. The armys desperate need for a never-ending supply of wood during the conflict led to massive deforestation in France and also back in the UK.
